How to creatively, and successfully drag your special event across the finish line!
With
John Brooman, Executive Director, Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival and the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation.

So, what does it take to develop, strategize, implement and execute the marketing & communications plan, and successfully drag your special event over the finish line year-after-year? Now, add to the mix an increasingly competitive fundraising environment, with numerous special events to support within the community, and still manage to exceed participant, sponsor and vendor expectations, all the while creating a "World-Class" event in the process?

Having had the opportunity to do this in his past on numerous occasions, hear how John has learned to utilize his skills, experience and entrepreneurial spirit to achieve these lofty goals! Often unorthodox in his approach, by applying both common and uncommon marketing strategies to completely obscure business plans is how he achieves his objectives, it's what he does best!

"Special event marketing & management is not your typical job and one has to constantly change gears on the fly, in order to be successful"

John will discuss the various challenges he has faced and emphasize what it took to creatively drag the project over the finish line, without compromise. John will also emphasize integrity and continuous hard work as a key factor with any successful endeavor... "Marketing is not rocket science. Rising up in the face of extreme adversity is something we can all learn from".

John Brooman, 39, is a native of Ottawa, and a Carleton University alumnus. With his formative years spent travelling and competing in international sailing events, he has spent the last 12 years heading up large-scale event promotion and production all over North America.

John spent 8 years living in Vancouver, BC, where he worked on the International AIDS Conference, the Around Alone, Warren Miller Entertainment and Pacific Promotions. He went on to San Francisco, CA managing special events in Silicone Valley and then opened his own company - which he sold in 2003. John also worked in the Middle East and Asia throughout the late 1990's.

Involved in independent and corporate events, John has run successful fundraising campaigns for amounts upwards of $5 million dollars. Now returned to his hometown after 15 years, John brings his knowledge of event logistics, marketing and promotion experience, and love of boating to the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival and the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation.
